Jewish Home MK Bezalel Smotrich on Wednesday attacked Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman's (Yisrael Beytenu) suggestion to destroy Jewish homes in Sde Boaz.
Sde Boaz was established 50 years ago, near Route 60 south of Jerusalem. The buildings in question were built on “survey land,” or land about which there is no suspicion of private ownership but whose status the government still has not “normalized,." Four families live there with their children.
The homes are currently being surveyed, and the legal process is expected to be completed within a year and a half. Nevertheless, Liberman ordered their demolition to take place immediately.
Meanwhile, Sde Boaz residents demand the Israeli government recognize survey land as belonging to the government, and cancel the plans to demolish the homes. Then Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon promised to see to changing the status of the land on which they are built.
"Liberman's commitment to end the legal process in a year and a half, in return for the demolition of these homes, is like laughing at a person who is suffering. He is making a mockery of the families.. He's acting as if the residents of Gush Etzion are complete idioits," Smotrich said.
"The fact is these legal proceedings have been going on for a long time, and the land has not been recognized as government land. This is a violation of the promise former Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon made four years ago.
"In another year and a half, Liberman may not be Defense Minister anymore, so he's making a promise which he knows he will probably never have to keep. All the professional surveying was completed eight months ago - there's no reason the land's status cannot be changed within a few months."
Demanding Liberman expedite the change of status, Smotrich also emphasized that the lands in question are government lands. Their location, he said, is of primary strategic importance to Gush Etzion's residents.
"Instead of taking the logical and correct action immediately, Liberman is dragging his feet and advancing an extraneous demolition of Gush Etzion homes. I call on Sde Boaz residents to politely refuse Liberman's demand that they evacuate their homes, and insist the survey's results be published immediately - before the unnecessary demolition is carried out."
According to Smotrich, "As long as Liberman insists on implementing leftist policies, there will be a public fight against the destruction and the discrimination. He is destroying homes in Judea and Samaria's Jewish areas, while everyone knows the Arabs build illegally and without limits and no one even makes an attempt to destroy their homes."
