MK Mickey Rosenthal (Zionist Union) blasted the attempt by the Meretz political party to muzzle Yoram Sheftel, saying that while he personally is not a fan of the outspoken attorney, he is against infringing on his freedom of expression.

"Sheftel is despicable" tweeted Rosenthal, himself a former journalist. "I have often argued with him, but it is forbidden to censor him. Freedom of speech means that we also have to hear enraging remarks."

Rosenthal was responding to Meretz appealing to the Supreme Court Tuesday to yank Sheftel's radio program from the air in light of recent statements he made against IDF Chief Gadi Eizenkot, calling him "a fat municipal worker in the sewage department." The appeal also claims that his history of making controversial statements disqualify him from hosting a radio show.

Sheftel apologized for his remarks Monday, "I take back what I said about the Chief of Staff. I meant to criticize him for the recent events on the Temple Mount. I do not find it acceptable to criticize his weight, and I apologize."

Meretz head MK Zehava Gal-On responded to Rosenthal's contentions. "Calling Knesset members 'Nazis' and 'scum' are not simply 'enraging remarks'. The Radio Authority are letting this pass without saying anything, and it is sending a message that this is ok."
