US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley blasted the UN Human Rights Council for its obsession with criticizing Israel during a speech to the council Tuesday.
“It is essential that this council address its chronic anti-Israel bias if it is to have any credibility,” Haley said.
She noted that the UNHRC "adopted five biased resolutions in March against a single country, Israel."
Haley contrasted the UNHRC's obsession with Israel with its inability to consider resolutions on more serious human rights crisis, such as the deteriorating situation in Venezuela. "It's hard to accept that this council has never considered a resolution on Venezuela."
She said that countries which violate human rights do not belong on the human rights council. "If Venezuela cannot [address its human rights violations without intervention], it should voluntarily step down from its seat on the Human Rights Council until it can get its own house in order."
"Being a member of this council is a privilege, and no country who is a human rights violator should be allowed a seat at the table.
Haley said that the US was still considering whether or not to stay on the council in light of its anti-Israel bias and failure to address many serious human rights crisis around the world. She added that she would later present ideas "to make the Human Rights Council more effective, more accountable, and more responsive."
Ambassador Haley is scheduled to travel to Israel tomorrow for a three day visit to the Jewish State.
