Ahmad Qurei is a former Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority, and a chief architect of the 1993 Oslo Accords between Israel and the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization), then headed by Yasser Arafat.
The Oslo accords created the Palestinian Authority as an interim form of partial self-governance by the Palestinians in parts of Gaza, Judea, and Samaria.
Now, Qurei, usually known by his Arabic nickname Abu Ala, says that the Oslo accords should be abolished. He also made sure to note, however, that the decision on this matter rests with the Palestinian Arab leadership.
In an interview on Arabic TV, Abu Ala said that while the accords were a good move at the time, they were only meant to remain in force for an interim period of 5 years. Now, 23 years later, it is obvious that the implementation of the accords has failed.
In the years and months leading up to the accords, there was intense debate and division within Israeli society. The supporters of the agreement claimed that it would lead to a final peace settlement. So far, this has proved a false prediction, and now a senior negotiator from the Palestinian side has said as much.
Naturally, though, Abu Ala blames the Israeli side for the failure of the Oslo process. According to him, the Israeli leadership conducted an "intifada" (the name given to Palestinian terror insurrections) against the accords, and thus caused the Oslo process to be erased, at least de facto.
