Hundreds of people attended Sunday night the funeral of Shimon Yochai Lasri, son of Rabbi Michael Lasri – a prominent Israeli Kiruv (Jewish outreach) rabbi.

Shimon, a 21-year-old yeshiva student, reportedly went to ritually immerse in the sea off the coast of Ashdod on Friday afternoon, but for reasons which at this point are unclear he was swept out and drowned.

The funeral took place in Bnei Brak and was attended by Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, head of the yeshiva in Ashdod Rabbi Meir Mughrabi, Larsi’s neighborhood Rabbi Sariel Rosenberg and many more

Shimon’s friends and classmates said he was a beloved “son of the Torah” with a noble moral compass.

His father, Rabbi Michael Lasri, had a difficult time mourning his son so Shimon’s brother, Meir, eulogized him instead. He spoke of the tragedy and described it as "an innocent victim of the Almighty."

Lasri was buried at the Ponovitch cemetery.
