Israeli Ambassador to the United Nation Danny Danon slammed the UN Security Council's statement rejecting Israel's sovereignty in the Golan Heights, accusing the international body of being out of touch with the realities on the ground.

The UNSC meeting was called in response to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's recent declaration that the Golan would remain part of Israel "forever," in a statement which angered Arab states.

In even convening such a discussion in the first place, Danon charged, the Council was "totally ignoring the realities on the ground in the Middle East."

"At a time when thousands are being slaughtered in Syria, and millions of others have been made refugees, the Security Council chose to focus on the State of Israel - the only democracy in the Middle East," Danon fired.

Accusing the Security Council of having been hijacked by countries opposed to Israel's existence, he added: "The Council must not allow politically interested groups to use it as a battering ram against the State of Israel."
