Unites States authorities announced the discovery of the longest ever cross-border drug-smuggling tunnel connecting Mexico and California, according to local reports.
The tunnel measured 795 meters (870 yards) long and was dug 14 meters (46 feet) below the surface, extending from a house in Tijuana, Mexico, to a fenced lot in a San Diego industrial area on the US side.
The elaborate tunnel, found near the Otay Mesa Border Crossing, is one of the narrowest ever discovered and includes lighting, ventilation and an elevator that fits eight to ten people.
Six people were arrested after the discovery of the tunnel and drugs cache.
Overall, authorities seized more than 14,000 pounds of marijuana and 2,242 pounds of cocaine.
An observant Border Patrol agent made the discovery six months after investigators from both countries dismantled another drug-trafficking tunnel in the same border area.
