The French National Bureau of Vigilance Against Anti-Semitism (BNVCA) reported that two Jewish teens were assaulted and robbed while leaving a synagogue in Marseille, and as a result of the attack required medical treatment.

The attack by two assailants "of African origin" according to the victims occurred on Tuesday. There are many Muslim African immigrants in France, increasing the likelihood of religious hatred being a prime motivator in the crime.

Making that likelihood undeniable is the fact that before attacking, the assailants said "dirty Jews, we will exterminate all of you," according to the teens.

One of the teens told BNVCA that he recognized the perpetrators, raising hopes that they will be located and brought to justice.

BNVCA called on Marseille police to "do everything possible to identify and question the attackers," urging a harsh measure of punishment so as to prevent future attacks.

"Jewish citizens have become increasingly vulnerable targets," BNVCA said. "This gives rise to insecurity, despite the significant steps taken by the government to try to protect its Jewish citizens, and their places of worship."

Heightened security, including mobilizing the French army to guard synagogues, has been seen since the January attacks in Paris that included a hostage crisis at a kosher supermarket, in which four Jews were murdered by a Muslim terrorist.
