The IDF returned fire at a Syrian army position along the northern border Thursday afternoon, after a mortar shell struck Israeli territory.

Sirens were heard throughout throughout the Golan Heights earlier, as a mortar shell had struck in an open field in the northern Golan. No damage or injuries were reported.

A military spokeswoman told AFP it hit an open field without causing any damage or harm to anyone. Nevertheless, Israel has vowed to take a zero-tolerance approach to any fire into Israel.

"Initial reviews suggest that this was a result of errant fire from the internal fighting in Syria," the statement said. "In response, the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) targeted a Syrian army position. Hits were confirmed."

Another army spokeswoman told AFP the forces had fired a Tamuz anti-tank missile at the Syrian military position.

It is the latest spillover from the Syrian civil war, as rebels, among them Al Qaeda's Syrian branch the Nusra Front, have been involved in fierce clashes with pro-regime forces for control of the Quneitra area bordering Israel.

Several mortar shells have hit Israeli territory in recent weeks, and the IDF shot down a Syrian drone last week, after it strayed into Israeli airspace.
