A bridge on Interstate 5 in the state of Washington in the United States collapsed on 7 p.m. Thursday (Pacific Time). The bridge is on the main route between Seattle and Vancouver in Canada.

Several vehicles fell into the water 15 meters below. Three people were rescued, and two were taken to hospital in stable condition to be treated for hypothermia.

Police believe there were no fatalities.

The cause of the collapse is not yet clear. Police are speaking to a truck driver whose vehicle may have struck the bridge.

The bridge was built in 1955. It was not considered structurally unsound, but had been listed as “functionally obsolete,” meaning its design was outdated.

Eyewitnesses said the collapse was instantaneous.
