The IDF will participate in the global Earth Hour project today, International Earth Day, by turning off the lights on bases throughout the country in order to reduce power consumption. This is the third consecutive that the IDF has participated in the project, reports the IDF Website.
Lt. Col. Eyal Ezra, Head of the Technology and Logistics Branch's Environmental Protection Administration, said that the "simple action of turning off the lights for just one hour, has an immediate impact on electricity usage," adding that it "is a message that can stop global warming through simple actions that depend on each one of us."
The Technology and Logistics Branch called on soldiers and commanders alike to join in the project not only on their bases, but also in their homes – by turning off the lights at the designated hour.
"It is the responsibility of the base commanders to appoint an officer to oversee the shutting off the lights in the buildings and facilities deemed relevant for the project, and to check the energy consumption before and after they are turned off," Lt. Col. Ezra said.
Earth Hour is just one small part of the IDF's constant efforts in recent years toward environmental conservation. Such efforts include a massive recycling revolution on military bases throughout the country, as well as measures to reduce power and water consumption, transitioning to cleaner fuel sources, and the integration of solar energy infrastructure.
