Countries that stockpile nuclear weapons are “mentally retarded,” Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said in Indonesia last Thursday, according to the Jordanian-based Al Bawaba news site.

Most of the Western world and Arab powers doubt Iran’s claim that its nuclear development is for peace, as Ahmadinejad claims.

Al Bawaba began its report by referring to Ahmadinejad as “Mr. Bombastic” and added that he stated his comment was the “mother of all Israel insults.”

Speaking at a meeting in Indonesia, the Iranian president stated, "The period and era of using nuclear weapons is over…Nuclear bombs are not anymore helpful and those who are stockpiling nuclear weapons, politically they are backward, and they are mentally retarded.”

Israel is assumed to have the only nuclear weapons in the Middle East.

The Iranian government –controlled Fars News Agency did not report Ahmadinejad’s remarks at a meeting on democracy, and instead it focused on his praising “the close and good relations between Iran and Indonesia and Vietnam.”

“Concerning his visit to Vietnam, Ahmadinejad said that the country was in the front line of resistance against occupiers and bullying powers and moves toward progress,” according to Fars.

He also mocked the presidential elections in the United States, which he called a "battleground for capitalists.”

He also told reporters that the United States should dismantle its international military bases, arguing that "coming or going, winning or losing is not important.” He added, "The important thing is the policy and behavior. And this behavior must be changed."
