For the second time this year, contamination discovered in the jet fuel was likely to cause delays on long-haul flights departing from Ben-Gurion International Airport, the Israel Airports Authority warned their foreign destinations Sunday.
Excessive water levels found in the jet fuel were blamed for the delays, according to a report broadcast on state-run Voice of Israel government radio.
Outbound flights headed for destinations such as the United States and east Asia were likely to be affected by the contaminated fuel, supplied by the Paz Aviation Assets company.
An inspection of the energy company's fuel reserves discovered that the water separation buffer was too low for use. The problem meant the likelihood of a shortage in airline fuel, which could mean that long-haul flights would have to make an extra stop on the way to their final destinations in order to refuel.
A similar problem occurred in May, when the Airport Authority's fuel supply was found to be contaminated.
