The National Labor Federation (Histadrut) may call a strike over social demands resulting from this summer’s cost-of-living protest, Histadrut head Ofer Eini hinted Sunday. Eini told retirees at a festive event that the organization “will respond” if it is not pleased with the Trajtenberg Committee’s proposed solutions to the issues raised.
Eini refrained from detailing the planned response, saying, “Wisdom is found in silence.”
Unlike protest leaders with the Student Union and other groups, Eini declared that the Histadrut will not react until the committee has revealed its official recommendations. “There are many leaks now, but I do not rely on them, because leaks to the press are by nature in the hands of those with various interests,” he told his audience.
The protests have been portrayed by some as a sign of middle class dissatisfaction, he said. However, he said, “it also belongs to the weaker segments of society.”
“If there is no change for the between when it comes to housing, to the poor, to retirees and more, then I will not see the recommendations as providing an answer to the protest’s demands,” he continued.
