Internet provider Bezeq International has completed installation of the first segment of an underwater cable that is planned to reach all the way to Italy by the end of 2011.
The cable, which will extend some 2,300 kilometers, will max at a capacity of 7.2 terabytes.
In approximately two months the company will begin to lay the deep-sea segment of cable, using a special ship. The cable will reach Bari, Italy.
Bezeq CEO Itzik Benvenisti told reporters at a news conference in Israel Tuesday, “Until now, there has been only one provider to the international media outlets in Israel.
“However, problems can occur, and the Internet is like oxygen; a person and a business cannot be without the Internet even for an hour today.”
