Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas decided to end security coordination with Israel at the end of an "emergency meeting" held this evening (Monday) in Ramallah following the launching of Operation Hoem and Garden in Jenin.
Abbas' spokesman said that it was decided to stop all meetings and engagements with Israel, a continuation of the suspension of security coordination.
He also said that "the Palestinian mechanisms will be obligated to protect the Palestinian people." Later, the speaker also announced the suspension of the agreements from the Sharm El-Sheikh summit.
At the Sharm El-Sheikh summit in 2005, then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Abbas reached agreements that ended the second intifada.
Abbas and the PA have announced the suspension of security cooperation with Israel before. A similar announcement was made in January 2023 following another military action in Jenin.
The PA previously halted security cooperation with Israel in 2020 over the government's plans to apply Israeli sovereignty in parts of Judea and Samaria, which were never implemented. The PA resumed the security cooperation after six months. Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas has often used the threat of halting the cooperation in protest against Israeli actions.
