US representative-elect George Santos' lying may be getting him into more trouble than he expected. According to a report in the Washington Post, the Nassau County district attorney has announced that she is opening an investigation into the New York Republican, whose surprise victory in November was quickly followed by revelations that he lied about his business experience, educational background, and family ancestry.

“The numerous fabrications and inconsistencies associated with Santos are nothing short of stunning,” district attorney, Anne T. Donnelly (R), said in a statement, adding that the residents of his congressional district “must have an honest and accountable representative in Congress,” and that “if a crime was committed in this county, we will prosecute it.”

Santos found himself under intense scrutiny, especially by the Jewish community, after reporters debunked a statement on his campaign website that said his mother was Jewish and that his grandparents, who were born in Brazil, according to the Forward, "fled Jewish persecution in Ukraine, settled in Belgium, and again fled persecution during WWII."

The Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) has announced that it is banning incoming Rep. George Santos (R-NY) for falsifying his resume and making misleading statements about having Jewish ancestry.

“We are very disappointed in Congressman-elect Santos. He deceived us and misrepresented his heritage. In public comments and to us personally, he previously claimed to be Jewish. He has begun his tenure in Congress on a very wrong note,” the RJC said. “He will not be welcome at any future RJC event."
