Defense Minister Benny Gantz warned Hamas that it would "pay the price" for any rocket attack on Israel from Gaza after two rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome system overnight.

"Last night was not a quiet one in Israel’s south. There is one party responsible for that: Hamas. I would like to tell the residents that we are working from a number of different directions, operational and other, to bring about long-term quiet. If Hamas violates the quiet, or tests our sovereignty, they will bear the price, and we will respond in whatever form and at whatever time moves us toward our objective of long-term calm for the people of Israel and the residents of the south,” Gantz said during a speech at a memorial service for military casualties of the Sinai Campaign

He added: “During Operation Sinai, we set out, with a home-front that had social cohesion and solidarity, which enabled leadership to mobilize the resources it needed to act. Even during a period of harrowing economic distress, while basic resources were being rationed, the entire nation stood behind the IDF and the government of Israel. That power hasn’t disappeared. It’s our responsibility as leaders to harness it, to work together with our citizens, and not allow anything except thoughts about what’s best for them motivate us as we act on behalf of the country. Without social solidarity, we cannot win any battles – military, medical or economic.”

Sirens were sounded overnight Saturday, around 2:00 a.m., in Palmachim and the northern industrial area in Ashdod.

The IDF confirmed that two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israeli territory. One launch did not trigger a siren in the Ashdod area in the absence of the need for it. The second launch triggered sirens in the city of Ashdod and in the Shfela region.

“Air defense fighters launched interceptors at the targets in accordance with policy,” the IDF statement said.

In response to the rocket fire, IDF fighter jets, helicopters and tanks attacked underground infrastructure and military positions of the Hamas terrorist organization in Gaza.
