How old is your mattress? Most people can't recall when they purchased theirs. While most of us spend an average of 8 hours on our mattress a night and actually look forward to sleeping on it, we tend to overlook if it's actually fit for serving one of our most critical needs.

Research performed by Mattress Portal indicates that certain mattresses may have a negative effect on your physical and mental health. To maintain physical and mental wellbeing, you need to sleep well, and sleeping well requires a good bed.

Inspect Your Mattress

Begin by carefully inspecting your mattress. Remove all bedding and mattress covers. Try to notice any indents or deformation on the surface. Remember: Most mattresses will sag if you sleep on them for extended periods of time since they are forced to support your body weight on a nightly basis.

Another thing to look for on your mattress are dust mites. A mattress may not always look bad or old. That’s why it’s important to notice how sleeping on it makes you feel. If you’ve never used a mattress cover before, you should start doing so immediately.

Your body sweats about 1 cup of bodily fluid a night and this could seep onto your mattress, especially if you've had it for a long time.

The following are some warning signs that will help you determine if your mattress is having a negative affect on your health. They also indicate if you the mattress can last a few more months or if it needs to be replaced ASAP.

Neck Pain

We often blame a bad pillow for the neck pain that we experience waking up in the morning. However, a sagging mattress can also be the cause of unbearable neck pain, affecting your body's position during sleep.

In fact, a saggy mattress can cause pain in your entire body including your lower back area. Stiff and aching muscles can also serve as a warning sign of a bad mattress.

Lack Of Sleep

We all know that a lack of sleep can have a negative impact on your emotional health. But sometimes you can get a full night 's sleep and still feel burnt out the next day. This may be a sign that you’re not enjoying sleep on your mattress.

While everyone feels tired from time to time, being exhaustion on a daily basis is a sure sign that you need a new mattress. Lack of sleep can account for bad moods, anxiety, and even depression.

A Bad Mattress Can Cause Hot Sleepers

Another condition that could force you to change your mattress is night sweats. If you happen to wake up every night feeling overheated, it’s probably because you're what's called a "hot sleeper."

There are specific mattress brands for hot sleepers, and if you toss and turn non-stop because of your mattress, you need to get a new one. While changing your sheets, and sleeping with a fan may help, hot sleepers sleep better on cooler mattresses.

Allergic Reactions

The longer you sleep on the same mattress, the more dust, pet hairs, and other dirt collects on your mattress. After a while, sleeping on the mattress can lead you to wake up with swollen eyes.

Rashes, breathing problems, and the sniffles are also signs that you’re experiencing an allergic reaction because of the mattress.

Joint Pain

A sagging mattress or one that's too stiff can cause joint pain. This means that the bed has aged and is unable to provide enough support to ensure your spine remains aligned and receives the support it needs.

If your spine is not in an entirely straight position when you sleep, this means your bed has dipped.

Other signs that may indicate a bad bed

Falling asleep takes longer when you sleep on an old mattress. Sleep apnea can be another indication, while waking up with a stuffy nose could mean you're allergic to your bed.

Breakouts and dull skin are also signs of issues with your bed. A lack of sleep could cause an increase in your stress hormones which ultimately results in breakouts and a loss of skin elasticity. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, it’s probably time to shop for a new mattress.
