The European Jewish Congress (EJC) has identified the stabbing victim in a Friday attack in London as Rabbi Alter Yaacov Schlesinger, 50.

"As we prepare to enter Shabbat, our thoughts and prayers for a Refuah Shlema to Rabbi Alter Yaacov Schlesinger victim of suspected knife hate crime in London today. Shabbat Shalom," EJC tweeted Friday.

Rabbi Schlesinger is from the Satmar yeshiva in Stamford Hill, London. He was aided by Hatzola, a first aid service, and is in stable condition.

Construction workers who were nearby at the time held the stabber down until police arrived to arrest him.

It is not yet clear whether the stabbing was a hate crime.
