Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu held a consultation on Wednesday on the continued activities of the education system during the coronavirus crisis with Education Minister Yoav Galant and National Security Adviser and NSC Director Meir Ben-Shabbat.

In consultation, it was decided, according to Minister Galant, that any educational institution in which a case of coronavirus infection was detected would be closed.

Prime Minister Netanyahu instructed the Education Minister to continue to work to protect both students and staff at Israeli schools.

Health officials have spoken over the last day about the need to seriously consider returning to online education and closing educational institutions. The Education Ministry has strongly opposed the move, claiming that it is not required because most schools are operating in an orderly manner without spreading the virus.

The Education Ministry announced earlier that the number of patients in the education system has risen by 19 in the last 24 hours and stands at 244 people.

42 educational institutions are closed due to the detection of coronavirus infections.

6,831 students and educational staff are in isolation after coming in contact with a coronavirus patient, 2,000 of whom entered isolation yesterday.
