Following months of rumors, Housing and Construction Minister Yoav Galant appears to be defecting to the Likud from the Kulanu party to which he currently belongs.

Senior Likud lawmaker David Bitan confirmed the reports in an interview with Kan on Thursday. "Yes, Galant is joining us," said Bitan. "I've known about this for a while."

Earlier, Yediot Aharonot reported that Prime Minister Netanyahu and Galant will soon hold a press conference together to announce the latter's decision to join the Likud.

The former IDF chief of the army Southern Command, Galant entered politics in 2015, running on the second spot of the centrist Kulanu party’s Knesset list.

After Kulanu won 10 seats in 2015, becoming the Netanyahu government’s largest partner, Galant was given the Housing and Construction Ministry, and served as Housing Minister for more than three and a half years.

With recent polls showing Kulanu declining in strength while other parties in the coalition are projected to increase the number of seats they hold, Galant’s future as a cabinet member is far from certain. An average of recent surveys show Kulanu falling from 10 to 7 seats, with some polls showing the faction winning as few as 5 mandates.

Galant is also seen to have a substantial following inside the Likud, Earlier this year, Galant took first place in the mock Likud primaries held during the "Likudiada", a convention of members of the Likud party which was held in Eilat.
