Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein on Tuesday called on the mayor of Haifa, Einat Kalish, to cancel the agreement to appoint council member Raja Za'tara from the Hadash party as deputy mayor.

"The events in the Haifa municipality are very disturbing. Any reasonable person understands that a delusional person who praises a terrorist organization will serve as deputy mayor," he said.

"This harms not only the residents of Haifa, but the Arab citizens of Israel in general, and I very much hope that the elected mayor will act with the necessary logic and cancel the coalition agreement."

Earlier this evening, Housing and Construction Minister Yoav Galant also expressed his opinion that Kalish should cancel the agreement with Hadash.

"Coexistence is important, but it must not come at the expense of the security of the State of Israel. I call upon the mayor of Haifa to cancel the coalition agreement with the Hadash party, whose leader was appointed deputy mayor, expressing support for Hezbollah and Hamas and inciting against Israel. In the State of Israel there will always be only one sovereign Jewish-Zionist sovereignty," Galant wrote on Twitter.
