MK Motti Yogev (Jewish Home), a member of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, on Saturday night called on the defense establishment to respond decisively to the Hamas-led attacks along the Gaza border.

"Despite our desire not to start a war in the Gaza Strip at this time, the reality obliges us to respond and to protect. We must harm senior Hamas officials, not wait for them to harm us,” said Yogev.

“Hamas will not be allowed to play with us using balloons, explosive devices and incendiary devices. It is our responsibility to protect the lives of our citizens and soldiers and to deter our enemies from harming us. A lack of appropriate response undermines our deterrence and questions the commitment of the defense establishment to the citizens of Israel,” he added.

Yogev’s comments came amid continued violent riots on the Gaza border. The IDF said on Friday that approximately 20,000 rioters and demonstrators participated in the Hamas-led riots in several locations along the Gaza security fence.

The rioters sabotaged security infrastructure, attempted to cross the security fence and infiltrate into Israel in several locations and hurled over 100 explosives and grenades towards IDF troops and the security fence.

No injuries were reported among the soldiers.

On Friday evening, IDF aircraft carried out an attack in northern Gaza in response to a number of grenades and explosive devices that were thrown at Israeli forces during violent disturbances along the security fence.

The so-called “March of the Return” border riots have been ongoing every Friday since March 30, but in recent days have become more frequent.

Hamas last week called for similar protest marches in Judea and Samaria as well.
