Opposition Chairwoman Tzipi Livni ("Zionist Union") this morning ridiculed Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked's remarks following a leftist demonstration in Tel Aviv last night.

"It's impossible not to think of David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, Yigal Allon, and Israel Galili this evening who once led a proud and unapologetic Zionist Left. To see PLO flags in Rabin Square was certainly not part of their vision: the Zionist Left should have supported the Nationality Law, but apparently there's no such thing anymore."

Livni answered her this morning, "That funny; I think a lot about Jabotinsky and Begin who believed in equality in the state of the Jewish people, to see a national and liberal Right that became extreme nationalist - wasn't part of their vision. There actually is a liberal national leadership; it's not in the government."

Shaked stung back, "This right-wing government has done more for the Arab sector than any other government. As Justice Minister, I built a court in the Arab city of Taibeh, and opened a new Shari'a court after 16 years. No other Justice Minister, including my predecessor. The Right believes in full civil equality and implements it. There are those to whom it's mere talk."
