Ateret Cohanim has been at the forefront of Jerusalem, and for close to 40 years has been establishing Jewish neighborhoods and strengthening Jewish roots in the Old City and its environs (also known as the "Holy Basin"). It is the well-known non profit organization leading the "7th Day War" to keep a united Jerusalem in Jewish hands.

Arutz Sheva spoke with Ateret Cohanim Executive Director Daniel Luria on Jerusalem Day.

"It's a great day for us and a great day for Am Yisrael (the people of Israel). In addition to the last few weeks, where we have seen huge achievements at every level, today is Jerusalem Day," Luria said.

"There is a certain battle taking place - do we have rights here? Do we not have rights here? Should we be able to live in certain parts of Jerusalem?

"We basically strengthen Jewish roots in the heart of one part of east Jerusalem. Most of east Jerusalem is already in Jewish hands," he said. "But the Holy Basin, which is the Old City and the area around, there isn't so many Jews, and that;s what the Arab world wants."

"Obviously, Jews for generations have wanted to be close to the Temple Mount, close to where our history and our heritage have unfolded," he added. "But at the same time, we understand that our facts on the ground, the Jewish presence, the neighborhood that we're building, the strengthening of the Jewish roots in and around the Old City - this is paramount. Because ultimately you have to fight for it."

He called on Jews, both in Israel and in the Diaspora, to purchase properties in Jerusalem, especially near or in the Old City and to support the Jews already living there.

"I want to tell everyone who is listening to this little talk: Understand that more Jewish life makes the lace more secure, because strength and strength in conviction brings ultimately security."
