A 25-year-old policeman was seriously wounded on Sunday night when he was shot in the stomach, apparently by another policeman during a police chase at the Hasira Interchange, near Herzliya in central Israel.

He was evacuated by paramedics to the Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv, and his condition is stable.

According to Israel Police, the chase began in the Lod area, and continued northward. The runaway vehicle was stopped a police checkpoint near Hasira.

Police believe the officer was shot by accident, as police forces struggled to take control of the suspects.

Israel Police is investigating the incident.
