Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) Major General Yoav Mordechai, met today with Ireland’s Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney, recently appointed the country’s Deputy Premier.

The two discussed the security situation in the Gaza Strip, Judea, and Samaria, the status of internal Palestinian reconciliation between Hamas and the PLO, and ways to expand Ireland's investments in the area so as to help the PA economy. Mordechai emphasized the need to address the root causes of incitement led by the Palestinian Authority.

Regarding the issue of enforcement against illegal construction in the Judea and Samaria area built with international community funding, the Major General clarified that Israel adheres to its position and will continue to enforce building laws in Area C, not allowing illegal construction.

The Deputy PM expressed his concern over the large number of children involved in security and criminal incidents being arrested by Israel.

Maj. Gen. Mordechai suggested that Ireland consider a project to strengthen welfare services in the Palestinian Authority as part of its overall investments in PA youth.

The two discussed the energy crisis in Gaza. Maj. Gen. Mordechai noted that Israel could plan an additional power line, and that infrastructure has been prepared to increase the flow of water by 10 million cubic meters, but that both of these are only possible under certain conditions.

Mordechai revealed the details of the Hamas terrorist organization's cynical exploitation for its own use of everything transferred by way of Israel for the welfare of the residents of Gaza, despite Gaza's severe hardships.
