A 12-year-old girl was seriously injured when she was struck by a car on her way to school in the northern coastal city of Haifa Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on Horev Street, as the girl was crossing the street.

Emergency medical teams from MDA and United Hatzalah were called to the scene and provided first aid to the girl before evacuating her to Carmel Hospital. She was later transferred to Rambam Hospital.

Police questioned the driver, a 40-year-old man from a nearby town. The driver said that the girl had been crossing at a crosswalk when the accident occurred.

“I was near the scene of the accident when the United Hatzalah central station informed me that there had been a serious accident,” said United Hatzalah emergency first responder Yonatan Ariel. “When I got there, I found a pedestrian, the young girl, with head injuries and contusions across her upper body after being struck by a private car. I provided emergency first aid at the scene of the accident, until an intensive care unit arrived which evacuated her to Carmel Hospital in Haifa. She was unconscious and suffering from multi-system injuries.”
