Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud) on Monday said he supports convicted IDF soldier Elor Azariya's request for pardon.

"I hope President Reuven Rivlin pardons Elor Azariya," Katz said, responding to a question on the matter.

He also said IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eizenkot and IDF Manpower Directorate Chief Moti Almoz's opposition to the pardon was insignificant.

"Right now we are discussing a civilian process," Katz explained. "The IDF has completed its role in this issue."

Elor Azariya was convicted of manslaughter in January for shooting a wounded terrorist, rejecting his argument that he suspected the terrorist of having an explosive vest.

Katz also mentioned the submarine affair (also known as Case 3000) and the interrogation of Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's personal attorney David Shimron.

"Whoever negotiates regarding Israel's security must be severely punished," he said, noting that "as a political person" he wants to "allow the system to do its own work."
