Avinoam Buchris, a former armored division IDF soldier who fought in Operation Protective Edge and received a medal for his actions during the operation, is currently in the United States following a series of treatments for muscular dystrophy (ALS), from which he began suffering after his military service.

Buchris, a resident of Shilo in the Binyamin region, arrived in the United States where he was treated by physicians specialilzing in the disease. After treatment his doctors recommended a unique and innovative procedure in South Korea.

In order to finance the NIS 1 million treatment, family and friends are currently campaigning to save Buchris.

Ofra Buchris, Avinoam's mother, said "it is not always easy to deal with the disease, but Avinoam is an optimistic person by nature and despite all the difficulty, the smile does not leave his face. We, as a family, chose to fight with all our might and not to let despair and difficulty defeat us."

As for the high cost of the treatment, Buchris says: "Every experimental treatment in which decades of research has been invested is expensive at first, but Avinoam has no time to wait, and we greatly rely on the mutual responsibility of the people of Israel. We believe that just as Avinoam acted to save his friends, the entire nation will stand by him at the moment when he needs them the most."
