United States Senator Lindsey Graham offered rare praise for President Donald Trump, in the wake of his announcement Monday to leave US troops in Afghanistan.

"President Trump has the smarts and the moral courage to listen to his generals and take their advice" Graham told Fox News.

Graham also warned Congress not to refuse the president's proposal to send troops Afghanistan, telling them that "the next 9/11 will be on your hands. It will be your fault if you shoot down this plan."

The praise was unusual coming from Graham, who prominently opposed Trump when he was running for the Republican presidential nomination, once calling on Trump to be thrown out of the Republican Party, and telling CNN that "I think he's a wrecking ball.”

Trump had announced Monday that he would leave US troops in Afghanistan. His decision was a drastic change from the isolationist positions he had taken as a presidential candidate.
