MK Oren Hazan (Likud) demanded Sunday that MK Ahmad Tibi (Joint Arab List) be suspended from his position as Deputy Speaker of the Knesset for "incitement to violence and a call for terror."

In a letter to Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, Hazan wrote that "Ahmed Tibi, one of your deputies, has been trying for years to walk the thin line between legitimate parliamentary conduct and illegal activity - incitement to violence and calls for terror."

"This 'dance' is what has allowed him to be perceived by at least some of the public as a full member of the Knesset and to enjoy the respect and honor involved in the position, including serving as deputy speaker of the Knesset," Hazan added.

He said that last Friday, "MK Tibi was caught on camera when he inflamed an Arab crowd that was marching on the entrances to the Old City of Jerusalem. He chanted: 'Jerusalem is Arab, Muslim, and Palestinian, and so is Al-Aqsa. That is how it has been and that is how it will be.' The crowd reinforced the same call with the addition of the cries of 'Allahu Akbar' (Allah is the greatest), a Muslim war cry, and 'With spirit and blood we will redeem Al-Aqsa!"

According to MK Hazan, even under the most lenient interpretation of the law, MK Tibi would not be able to deny that his words and the rally he attended had great potential to kindle a violent conflagration, and may have been the reason protests turned violent last week.

"For such an action to be taken by an MK - aside from the issue of its level of criminality - defiles the dignity of the Knesset, all the more so when it is done by the Deputy Speaker of the Knesset. Since I am aware of how important the dignity of the Knesset is to [you], I ask that MK Tibi be suspended as Deputy Speaker of the Knesset. He should be prevented from taking his seat in the Knesset and holding discussions in the plenum while he shows contempt for the institution that is dear to us all. "
