President Trump returned to the US Saturday evening after a five-state trip spanning the Middle East and Europe, his first overseas trip since taking office in January.

While the president received largely positive receptions during his trip, particularly in Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the Vatican, back home much of the news media played down the trip, focusing instead on continuing allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, the termination of former FBI Director James Comey, and charges that the president was in some way responsible for a Republican congressional candidate body-slamming a reporter in Montana.

Upon his return, the president returned to his unofficial mouthpiece which became a focus of his presidential campaign – his personal Twitter account – to criticize the media’s coverage of his administration over the past week.

On Sunday, the president claimed the media had downplayed the victory of Greg Gianforte in a special election in Montana. Gianforte, who had lost the gubernatorial election in Montana last year after he distanced himself from the Trump ticket, this time openly embraced the president, who gave his backing to the GOP nominee.

“Does anyone notice how the Montana Congressional race was such a big deal to Dems & Fake News until the Republican won? V was poorly covered,” Trump wrote.

The president also accused the media of inventing many of the alleged White House leaks which have been circulating in news outlets in recent weeks, calling them “fake news”.

“It is my opinion that many of the leaks coming out of the White House are fabricated lies made up by the #FakeNews media.”

“Whenever you see the words 'sources say' in the fake news media, and they don't mention names it is very possible that those sources don't exsist but are made up by fake news writers. #FakeNews is the enemy!”
