A rocket fired by Arabs in Gaza slammed into southern Israel on Saturday, prompting retaliatory
Israeli air and tank strikes, sources on both sides said.

The Israeli army said the rocket hit an open area near Ashkelon.

"No casualties have been reported," it said. "In response, a tank and aircraft targeted two Hamas positions in the northern Gaza Strip."

A Gaza source said an Israeli aircraft attacked a Hamas military training facility north of Gaza City and IDF tank fire targeted a Hamas observation post adjacent to Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza, close to the border with Israel.

They reported no casualties.

Though not all missiles are fired by Hamas, as there are a number of other terrorist groups with access to rockets in Gaza, Israel insists that Hamas is in full control of the region and considers it officially responsible for all rockets fired at Israel from within Gaza.
