At least five people were stabbed in a riot involving neo-Nazis that broke out on Sunday at the California capitol building in Sacramento.

The victims had stab wounds that required critical medical care, a spokesperson for the local fire department told CNN.

Their conditions were not immediately known.

The spokesperson told the network said the brawl broke out around noon when a group of "right-wing extremists" held a planned rally near the state capitol.

Dozens of police in safety gear and on horseback tried to control the mayhem, according to the Sacramento Bee. The stabbings involved victims on both sides, according to Sacramento Police Chief Sam Somers.

According to the newspaper, the Black Hawks, a group of more than 100 anti-fascist protesters dressed in black, led a chant of “racists go home” and drove a handful of neo-Nazi protesters off the ground.

Video showed people running and being pursued by others with sticks. Some of the people hid their faces with scarves and masks, according to CNN.

It is unknown whether police have arrested anybody.
