A masked and armed man opened fire in a movie theater near the western German city of Frankfurt. He has since been shot and killed by a special police unit.

Local media initially reported that up to 50 people were injured, but that has been proven incorrect. "We believe that there were no injured people, and that the people who were in the cinema with the perpetrator could be freed uninjured," said a police spokesperson.

"The police had an emergency call at 2:45 p.m," said the Hessen Interior Minister. "The caller said there was a masked man...armed with a long gun. It is unclear whether it was a real gun. The caller heard four shots and said that the masked man appeared a little mentally unstable. Police special forces were called"

The Israeli Foreign Ministry is in contact with the situation room in Germany. German authorities say they are not aware of any foreign citizens, including Israelis, who were present.

More information will be updated when it is available.
