A heavily-armed man stopped by police in Los Angeles was heading towards a gay pride march, police say.

The incident in Santa Monica came just hours after a deadly gun rampage at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, by a Muslim terrorist.

Police responding a call about the reported "prowler" in Santa Monica stopped the car in question, and found a large stash of weapons, ammunition and bomb-making equipment.

Police arrested the suspect, who police say is from Indiana, but have said they do not believe the incident was related to the Orlando attack, which has since been claimed by the ISIS terrorist group.

But in an eerie coincidence, the suspect told his arresting officers that he was on his way to the LA Pride festival in West Hollywood, according to the LA Times.

Police "were not aware of what the suspect’s intentions were at this point," according to Santa Monica Police spokesman Saul Rodriguez.

However,  security at the gay parade was significantly beefed up following the incident, and a city official in West Hollywood told the Times authorities were very concerned about what the man was planning.

"They found him with weapons that were very disconcerting," the source said, adding officials are "taking the appropriate safety precautions."
