Former US Central Intelligence Agency director David Petraus is investing in the Israeli start-up Windward, the company announced Wednesday, according to The Marker.

Windward is a ship traffic monitoring company based in Tel Aviv, which credits itself with building the world's first maritime data platform.

Dan Senor, co-author of "Start-Up Nation," the 2009 book on Israel's booming high-tech industry, will also be investing in Windward, the company announced.

Windward founder and CEO Ami Daniel applauded Petraus' interest in the company.

“General Petraeus’ dual perspective - as one of the world’s foremost military and intelligence experts and as a member of [US private equity firm] KKR - gives him a unique vantage point on the value of Windward’s data and analytics for both security and finance,” he remarked.

Daniel also noted that investments from Petraus and Senor come as the company marks its fifth anniversary. It is Petraus' first investment into an Israeli company.

Notable previous investors to Windward include former Israel Defense Forces chief of staff Gabi Ashkenazi.
