An additional security detail has been assigned to opposition leader Yitzhak Herzog and his wife Michal, after a threatening letter arrived at Labor headquarters in Tel Aviv on Wednesday.

"You better get ready. Soon there'll be a booby-trapped vehicle next to you or next to Michal," the letter warned. "You're nothing, you should quit, you will never be prime minister. It's only a matter of time before they kill you and Michal."

According to a Channel 2 report, security officials are not taking the threat lightly and immediately decided to reinforce security detail around the Zionist Union chairman's family.

In addition, police are making every effort to trace who sent the death threat.

Herzog's office responded, not giving too much stock to the threats: "We will continue to work for the citizens of Israel and the future of the country everywhere despite the hallucinatory voices that rise up from time to time. We fully trust the Israel Police's handling of the matter."

It is not the first scare the Herzog family has experienced since the conclusion of divisive general elections in March.

In late April, rocks were pelted at Michal Herzog's car as she left the family's home in north Tel Aviv, damaging the vehicle's rear window.

Police determined the incident had been an "accident" with security footage near the scene suggesting the rocks had actually been catapulted into the air by a vehicle in front of Herzog's car.
