Space and Technology Minister Danny Danon (Likud) has become the latest object of internet ridicule, as leftist Israelis mock him for being appointed to the post after a similar campaign against Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (Jewish Home).

Several sarcastic remarks and memes have surfaced on Twitter and Facebook spoofing the odd appointment, which may stem from the sudden shift in departments; Danon was previously Deputy Defense Minister and is not known to have a specific background in the sciences. Popular memes include, among other things, Danon being placed on the set of popular eighties movie E.T.

Danon himself responded to the campaign Sunday on Army Radio

"If I had to check at all times what was said about me on the Internet, I would not get up in the morning," he noted.

"There's a degree of arrogance [being expressed] towards the new government," he added. "We have been chosen and received public confidence, so let us do our work."

"If in a few months they tell us we're unsuccessful - then it would be legitimate. " Danon continued. "I intend to study the issues of my office and spend it like any other role in public life."

Danon's comments surface after a hateful incitement campaign was launched against Shaked last week, resulting in a slew of sexist comments and comparisons to the Nazis.

The campaign grew so virulent that Shaked was assigned a special security detail - prompting a surprising show of support not only from other members of the current government toward the new minister, but also from several members of the Left.
