Deputy Transport Minister Tzipi Hotovely (Likud) used her Facebook account Sunday to call on citizens to stop spreading war-related rumors on the Whatsapp social network.

"Friends, we have all been surrounded by harsh rumors in recent weeks,” she wrote. “Each one of us is responsible not to spread them, in order to put an end to the baseless Whatsapp rumors.”

"This is part of Hamas's psychological warfare,” she added.

"Cooperation with the spreading of rumors creates demoralization and purposeless fear,” Hotovely explained. “See yourselves as partners in the struggle against this psychological warfare.”

Waves of rumors have accompanied the fighting in the Protective Edge campaign and began even earlier, after the abduction and murder of three teenagers in Gush Etzion. Some of the rumors proved true, while others were made up out of whole cloth.
