United States news outlets are reporting that a large cargo plane has crashed outside the Birmingham airport in Alabama.

The plane is believed to have been a UPS cargo plane. It crashed in an open field near the airport.

News crews that rushed to the scene found the plane burning. The media was forced to move back due to a series of explosions.

It was not immediately clear if anyone was hurt in the crash.

A spokesperson for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the plane that crashed had been heading for Birmingham, and had come from Louisville, Kentucky.

Just five weeks ago, a Boeing 777 operated by Asiana Airlines crashed near the San Francisco International Airport. Three teenagers died in the crash.
