After months of waiting, the world was introduced to the latest “royal” on Monday evening, as Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, gave birth to a baby boy. In a statement, Kensington Palace said "Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge was safely delivered of a son at 4:24 p.m.” local time. "The baby weighs 8lbs 6oz."

Mother and baby are doing well, the statement said. Middleton will remain in the hospital overnight, and if all checks out fine, she will be released with her baby Tuesday.

The new baby is third in line to the British throne currently occupied by Queen Elizabeth, behind Princes Charles and William.
