Less than three weeks after the brutal Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre, another shooting erupted at a New Year's Eve fireworks show in Sacramento, California, killing two people and wounding at least three others.

Some 40,000 people, including families with young children, had gathered for a 9 p.m. fireworks show, CNN affiliate KOVR reported, adding that the shots were heard after a fight broke out at a nearby sports bar.

Bystanders sought cover upon hearing the shots, which reportedly occurred after the fight spilled out onto the street.

Police canceled the next fireworks show, which was scheduled for midnight.

Witnesses told KOVR that they saw a man being taken into custody.  "They had one person in an ambulance and one person in a cop car," a woman told the news station.

"I saw the gun in the hand. He was just screaming and shooting," said another.

Police have not yet released information on the arrests and no further details have been disclosed to the public.

Police and fire trucks arrived at the scene to secure the area, according to KOVR.

The wounded were taken to nearby hospitals.

Just last week, the state of California held a one-day gun buyback, during which over 1600 firearms were collected from local residents, in exchange for food stamps.
