Hurricane Sandy Sinks Ship, 2 Missing

The HMS Bounty, a tall ship, went down near Cape Hatteras. Fourteen were rescued, two still missing.

Extreme weather off the coast of North Carolina sank a tall masted ?ship Monday after sweeping three crew members overboard. Two people in the crew of the ship, the HMS Bounty, remain missing.

The 180-foot ship, used in making movies, was heading for Florida. The crew had been in touch with the National Hurricane Center and had tried to go around the storm.

One of the three swept overboard managed to swim to a life raft. The entire crew was forced to abandon ship as the vessel sank.

They were rescued by the Coast Guard and taken to Air Station Elizabeth City.

The North Carolina-based WNCT-TV news station reported that the ship that sank was well known, having appeared in the Hollywood films “Mutiny on the Bounty” and “Pirates of the Caribbean II.”

A tropical storm warning remains in effect for the east coast of the United States. Tens of millions of people have prepared for potential blackouts and road blockages in their areas by clearing store shelves of batteries, canned goods, bottled water, chocolate and other storm essentials.
