Minister of the Interior Eli Yishai leveled harsh accusations against the IDF on Thursday while speaking at an event honoring the IDF brigade Netzach Yehuda (Nachal Hareidi), which has primarily hareidi soldiers.

“The people of Israel’s uniqueness is in its unity, like the four species [waved on Sukkot]. But in recent years, the IDF has not wanted to create a second hareidi regiment, and whoever says otherwise is lying,” he said.

“The IDF does not want to enlist hareidim,” he declared, “Don’t believe any of the stories.” He noted that former State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss had criticized the IDF for failing to enlist hareidi men who were interested in service.

“It’s easiest to attack hareidim, but when we come to enlist, they’re afraid we’ll become the majority in the army,” Yishai added.

“They wanted to destroy the Torah world,” he accused. “Practically speaking they aren’t succeeding, but the media campaign is going well.”

In conclusion, Yishai noted the difference in birthrates in the hareidi and secular communities. Hareidi society would be happy to see higher birthrates in the secular world as well, he said, “We try to convince them, but it doesn’t work. They marry at age 30 or later and have one child – or at best, two children.”
