Mainstream Arab violence is escalating in Israel.

Two young Arab Israeli men from the Lower Galilee town of Kfar Yafia, a suburb of Nazareth allegedly opened fire at police Wednesday during an early morning chase.

They allegedly attacked after police saw them firing in the air, and ordered them to stop. Police returned fire, and arrested one of the two men. The second man managed to escape.

The gun, believed to have been a stolen M-16, was confiscated. No one was injured in the clash.

Kfar Yafia is built on the site of the ancient town of Yaphia, mentioned in the biblical Book of Joshua as a border town of Zevulun (Joshua 19:12). Populated by more than 16,000 people, the majority of the town is Muslim. Some 30 percent of the community are Christian Arabs.
