A man set himself on fire inside the designated protest area outside of former US President Donald Trump’s hush money trial in New York on Friday, NBC News reported, citing a witness.

The man walked into the park across the street from the courthouse, throwing flyers into the air, a senior law enforcement official told CNN. He then pulled something out of a backpack — it was not immediately clear what the item was — and lit himself on fire, the official said.

The New York Police Department, which already had a heavy presence outside of the courthouse due to the high profile of this case, responded to the incident.

As smoke emerged from the dedicated protest area, they rushed to find what looked like a fire extinguisher, according to NBC News.

During Friday’s proceedings, the full panel of 12 jurors and six alternates was selected.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. The charges are related to hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
