Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Thursday that it foiled a terrorist attack targeting a synagogue in Moscow.
FSB told Russian media in a statement that law enforcement that came to arrest the suspect shot and killed him during a standoff after he resisted arrest.
The identity of the suspect has not been revealed but the FSB noted that he was a citizen of a Central Asian country, who had arrived in Russia in 2023. The agency added that the suspected terrorist had a criminal record at home and became radicalized while serving a prison sentence.
After arriving in Russia, the suspect started to actively prepare for the attack. He studied the area where the synagogue in question was located and bought chemicals and components needed to produce an improvised explosive device (IED).
The FSB stated that when security forces raided the suspect's apartment, he “offered armed resistance and was neutralized with return fire.” The forces discovered a fully functional IED as well as explosives in his residence.
